And the more surprisingly, the company decided to radically change the image of its crossover bestseller, turning it from a polished SUV with a passenger car design into a brutal all-terrain vehicle with an angular exterior design. Let’s start the review of the new Toyota RAV 4 2019 (photo) with the consideration of the exterior, which from now on has nothing to do with its predecessor. The car was strikingly similar to the FT-AC concept shown last November, but then no one even said that the next “RAV” would look like this. So, the front end of the crossover in the new body was made in the style of 4Runner SUV (unexpectedly, yes?) With a similar radiator grille expanding at the bottom, with a massive bumper, grinning “toothy” insert in the bottom and round fog lamps. The head optics here are completely original, slightly oblique and stretched, somewhat reminiscent of the latest models of Mercedes-Benz (CLS and A-Class). The RAV4 sidewalls became significantly more impressive, the angular wheel arches got massive plastic overlays, and the sill line became lower. The rear view mirrors were made on the legs, the maximum size of the wheels increased from 18 to 19 “, the window in the rear pillars got a completely different shape, and the spoiler on the fifth door was accentuated by a small black strip creating the effect of a” floating “roof. The stern of the new model Toyota RAV4 of the 2019 model year retained horizontally oriented lanterns, but their smooth outlines were replaced by sharp edges, and at the bottom of the lighting equipment a chrome lining that runs across the width of the trunk lid surrounds. On the bumper, there is a massive lining, and on the sides, a pair of exhaust pipe sockets are viewed. In addition, for SUV available two options: Limited and Adventure. The first provides a lot of chrome accents in the appearance of the exterior and 19-inch wheels, and the second – more “all-terrain” differs in the design of bumpers and grilles, enlarged overlays on the wings, roof rails and white-painted roof and racks. In the cabin of Toyota RAV 4, there have also been significant changes. The front panel architecture retained its horizontal orientation, but everything is completely different here. Revisions have undergone the steering wheel and the form of the ventilation deflectors, the instrument panel has been completely redesigned. Instead of two wells, now there is a largely drawn speedometer centered on the center (a tachometer to the left of it, and coolant temperature and fuel level indicators to the right). At the top of the center console is a stand-alone screen of the Entune 3.0 multimedia complex (maybe seven or eight inches) that supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as Wi-Fi and Amazon Alexa. Plus here there was an audio system of the following generation. Attention is drawn to the new gear selector switch located to the left of it the control electronics selection washer, the converted door cards and a wide shelf for different loads in front of the front passenger. Under the hood, there were no surprises: for the North American version of the crossover, two versions are suggested. The base is a car with a 2.5-liter atmospheric gasoline “quartet” of the long-haul Dynamic Force family, which is installed on Camry, where it produces 206 hp. (the exact power on Raf has not yet been announced). This engine is paired with a new 8-speed automatic transmission (characteristics), and the alternative is a hybrid powerplant, which includes the same motor, but supplemented by an electric motor on the rear axle, a battery, and an electromechanical variation. It is expected that a number of markets (including Russia) will have a modification with a two-liter engine. As before, by default, the SUV comes with a drive to the front axle, and the full one is offered for a surcharge. But here for the first time, we used the all-wheel-drive transmission Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD with individual multi-plate clutches for the rear wheels, thanks to which we managed to implement the thrust vector control. At the same time, simple cam clutches are installed at both ends of the propeller shaft, which allows disconnecting the all-wheel-drive while driving on the highway, providing better fuel efficiency. Plus there was a system Multi-Terrain Select, changing the algorithms of the traction control system, depending on the road surface under the wheels.
