The world premiere of the new Renault Megane RS 2018 took place at the motor show in Frankfurt 2017 in September. This is a model of the third generation, built on the basis of Megan 4generation. The pre-production version of the hot-hatchet was shown back in late May on the track in Monaco when the manufacturer celebrated 40-year participation in Formula 1.
Even on the spy photo Renault Megane RS 2018 in the new body we knew that the car will receive unusual three-section navigation lights in the front bumper and a central tail exhaust with the trapezoidal nozzle in the frame of the “teeth” of the diffuser.
The hot hatchback also flaunts all the diode lights in the base, the air intakes in the front wings, another radiator grille with the RS logo, aggressive bumpers, trim tabs and extended wings.
In the interior of the new model Renault Megane RS, there are sports seats with integrated headrests, upholstered leather and Alcantara steering wheel with thickened rim and notch of zero generation, a different gear selector, metal pedals, and as strokes are used inserts for carbon and red stitch.
Externally and internally, the new Megan RS 2018-2019 year looks impressive, but what about the technical characteristics? Under the hood, there is located a 1.8-liter turbo engine, which was borrowed from the Alpine A110 coupe, but at the same time changed the cylinder head, turbocharger, and firmware.
As a result, its impact on the front-drive hot-hatch was 280 hp. and 390 Nm of torque, and as a transmission, not only 6-speed mechanics is available, but also a preselective robotic EDC box for six gears. It is expected that with this engine the model picks up a hundred from a place in about six seconds.
At the same time, the manufacturer emphasizes that power and maximum speed are secondary, and controllability is brought to the fore. Indeed, the predecessor with a two-liter engine (output varied depending on the modification from 250 to 275 hp) has always been strong in this exercise.
Unlike competitors, the new Renault Megane RS 2018 is equipped with a fully-controlled 4Control chassis, allowing the rear wheels to change the turn angle by 2.7 degrees. At low speeds, this improves maneuverability, at high speeds – adds stability and stability to the car in bends.
In addition, unlike the usual Megan, the RS version has extended front (+ 60 mm) and rear (+ 40) ruts, retuned shock absorbers, other springs, and more rigid anti-roll bars. For braking, four-piston monobloc calipers from Brembo meet.
The car is immediately available in two versions: Sport and Cup. The second one is track – it’s even more rigid, it has more rear brakes, on the front axle there is a mechanical locking of the Torsen differential instead of its electronic simulation on the Sport version, and 19-inch wheels are “covered” in tires with a width of 245/35 (235 in the base/40 R18).
Packages and prices
The start of sales of the new Renault Megan RS in Europe will start in December 2017 at a price of 33 000 euros. And at the end of 2018, a modification of the Megane RS Trophy with a force of up to 300 engines is expected.
Among the curious options for the novelty is the “RS Monitor” system, which allows real-time telemetry to be displayed on the R-Link 2 multimedia screen, and its more advanced version “RS Monitor Expert” additionally provides for camera connection and the ability to share records on the network.
