There are six power units for the car, but only three of them will be available at the beginning – all with the proprietary 4MATIC four-wheel drive system and a nine-speed automatic. The engines – gasoline and diesel “fours” and new inline “sixes”, the V8 engines are now only laid down by modifications from AMG.
Diesel versions of the CLS 350 d and 450 d are equipped with 2.9-liter “six” power of 286 hp. (600 Nm) and 340 hp. (700 Nm). They provide model acceleration from zero to a hundred for 5.7 and 5.0 seconds respectively. Under the hood of the petrol CLS 450 4MATIC there is a 367-hp (500 Nm) M256 unit, supplemented with the EQ Boost system (4.7 seconds to a hundred).
The latter includes a 48-volt starter-generator, powered by its own lithium-ion battery, and allows for a brief increase in the return on 22 hp. and 250 Nm. The electric motor helps at start and in a number of other cases, when necessary, and when braking it recovers energy to recharge its battery.
