History «AM General» started in 1903, when the «Standart Wheel Company», engaged in the production of bicycles, decided to gain a foothold in the emerging automotive market. For this department was founded «Overland Automotive Division», which was the first car model Runabout. In 1908 the company bought a John Willis, and in 1912 formed «Willys-Overland Company». The company was engaged in manufacturing of the famous series of Willys-Knight and later unveiled the Whippet. In 1953 the company «Willys-Overland» acquired Henry Kaiser, who renamed it the «Willys Motors Inc». After that, the company won in «Studebecker Corporation» public tender for the production of military trucks. Independent existence did not last long. In 1970 the company was taken over by «American Motors Corporation» and a new name – «Jeep Corporation». In its structure there were two departments – «Commercial Products Division» and «General Products Division». In 1971, «General Products Division», continuing to be a formal division of «American Motors», received a new name – «AM General Corporation extends.” The history of the Hummer brand has its roots in 1979. That’s when the US Army announced a tender for the creation of a tactical cars that have acted as an alternative to a small SUV series CJ. One year later – in July 1980 – «AM General» start test its prototype HMMWV Desert in Nevada. Having won over the next 10 months contracts rivals of «General Dynamics» and «Teledyne», prototypes «AM General» received a start in life. In March 1983 the company received from the US Army order for production for 5 years, 55000 copies of the HMMWV. Despite the fact that the state contract guaranteed the company a good financial existence, in the ’80s the company changed owners twice, and in 1992 became the property of «Renco Group Inc».
