The BMW Group continues to expand its model line under its new sub-brand “i”, however, is still only a concept. The next project was an open sports car BMW i8 Spyder Concept, which will be shown to the public at the Beijing Motor Show 2012 at the end of April. The car is based on the coupe the BMW i8, but has a slightly shorter wheelbase. Body and chassis spider made of composite materials, and the door kept the architecture of the “butterfly” and open up. Unlike the coupe, i8 Spyder Concept has received the transparent cover of the engine compartment, located at the rear, as well as other interior materials. But concepts are technically identical. The wheels of the rear axle drives the Spider 1.5-liter turbo power of 223 hp (300 nm), and the front, if necessary, rotates the 132-hp motor. Total returns this powerplant makes 350 hp (500 Nm). From zero to a hundred BMW i8 Spyder Concept accelerates 5.0 seconds (0.4 slower than the coupe) and a top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h. Average fuel consumption in the combined cycle, according to the automaker, is 3.0 liters per 100 kilometers, and pure electric hybrid is able to overcome 35 km.
