The BMW company will stop for some time the production of the most powerful “civil” version of the BMW 5 Series sedan because of the inconsistency of the indicated data on fuel consumption and harmful emissions with the real state of things.
Suspension of production will concern only the European market and is connected with introduction thereof a new procedure of tests of cars on the economy and ecological compatibility WLTP (World Light Vehicles Tests).
During the tests under the new procedure, which was carried out by BMW itself, it was found out that the actual consumption and emissions of the 4.4-liter V8 twin-turbo engine did not match the company’s data. Therefore, companies need to equip the engine with Otto’s particulate filter before June (when WLTP tests begin in Europe). By this time, BMW does not have time to carry out modernization work because it decided to suspend production and sales of the M550i in the European market.
In BMW they say that there is a rather difficult work to be done since there is no free space under the hood due to the dimensions of the engine and attachments. Therefore, the Germans will have to completely reconsider the layout of the engine compartment.
