July 11, 2017 at a special event in Barcelona, a presentation of the flagship sedan Audi A8 in the new body of the D5. The world premiere of the model will be held in September at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
The company remained true to its principle, retaining the appearance of the new Audi A8 2018, although the front and rear parts of the car still underwent a serious revision, while in the profile the model remained fully recognizable.
The front end at the “eight” was made in the style of the concept Prologue with a wide chrome hexagonal radiator grille and narrowed head optics. The latter is already in the database is matrix, and the rear lights are made using organic light-emitting diodes.
The stern of the new model Audi A8 2017-2018 stands out with narrow lighting equipment, cut by a chrome strip, above which there is a long strip of a stop signal. In general, the appearance of the exterior of the car has more sharp edges, which made it possible to give the car a more dynamic, tightened and rigorous appearance.
But the Audi A8 D5 in the new body was completely transformed. Compared to its predecessor, there is a completely different steering wheel, distinguished by an unusual design, a completely electronic instrument panel, a different front panel, and two large color screens with a Full HD resolution are located in the center console.
The company decided to abandon the use of physical buttons as much as possible, transferring control of almost all functions and systems to touch displays. Behind the default is a three-seater sofa, but for a surcharge car can be equipped with two separate seats, and the top option offered one innovative system.
It’s about the function of heating and foot massage, which is not yet offered by any of the competitors of the new A8. This is a special step in the right front seat, where the rear passenger can attach legs and relax as much as possible. Plus the massage pneumatic chambers for the back is equipped with its multi-contour chair.
The new multimedia complex in the car was named MIB 2+, and the tablets on the headrests of the front seats are removable and can be used outside the car. In addition, there is a self-learning navigation system, a two-odor air scent function, wireless charging for smartphones, a projection display, central and side armrest heating, and a Bang & Olufsen audio system with 23 speakers.
The new Audi A8 2017-2018 was based on the MLB Evo chassis, which made it possible to reduce the weight, in comparison with the car of the previous generation. The overall length of the sedan is 5 172 mm (+ 37), the wheelbase is 2 996 (+ 6), the width is 1 945 (-4), the height is 1 473 (+ 13). The length of the Long version is 5 302, and the distance between the axes is 3 128.
The body of the “eight” of the fourth generation is a real work of engineering. Its design uses three dozen different materials, including carbon fiber, magnesium, various types of steel and twenty variants of aluminum alloys, seven of which were developed specifically for this model. The body was heavier than the old one (281 kg), but much stronger and safer.
As powertrains for the Audi A8 are available 3.0-liter petrol TFSI (286 hp) and diesel TDI (340 hp) engines, as well as turbocharged “eight” in volume of 4.0 liters per 460 forces (petrol ) and 435 “horses” (diesel). The latter is borrowed from the crossover Audi SQ7.
At the top of the scale was a modification with a 6.0-liter W12 from the Bentley Bentayga SUV , but its power for the sedan was reduced to 585 hp. All engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic, have a quattro all-wheel drive, and are supplemented with a Mild Hybrid system with a starter generator and a 48 volt battery, which allows the engine to muffle in traffic jams and coast down.
Later in the lineup there will be initial modifications with 2.0-liter “quartets”, as well as a full hybrid version of the A8 L e-tron quattro, which included a three-liter diesel, an electric motor and a battery with a capacity of 14.1 kWh. The total output of 449 forces, the run on electric traction is declared 50 km, and the battery supports the function of wireless charging.
The standard equipment of all modifications of the Audi A8 2018 includes an air suspension, while it can be equipped with active elements for a surcharge. In this case, the anti-roll bars are replaced with individual electric motors and planetary gears for each wheel. They allow you to reduce rolls and improve the smoothness of the stroke, pre-adjusting the suspension under the profile of the road, which is scanned by a special camera above the windshield.
In addition, the rear wheels here can rotate by an angle of up to five degrees, so that the radius of the turn in the parking lot (for the short-wheel version) is the same as on the Audi A4 sedan. In high-speed bends, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the front wheels, improving stability.
The new Audi A8 is equipped with a true artificial intelligence, Artificial Intelligence, which provides twelve sonars, four video cameras, one additional front camera, one infrared camera, four medium-range radar and one laser scanner (bend fingers).
So this sedan became the first production car with a device of laser vision, which previously were considered too expensive for mass use. And now there is an autopilot of the third level of autonomy, however, its manufacturer will not allow using it until 2019, when legislative delays are settled in Europe.
There is one more restriction, the autopilot works only at speeds up to 60 km / h, but it does not need to hold hands on the steering wheel and even allows you to watch the built-in TV, fully controlling the situation on the road. In this case, self-parking without the driver’s participation, including arriving at the garage, does not seem surprising.
